Many understandings of the city live outside the written word. The works gathered here meet urban life through lived experience, observation, and storytelling.
This collection began from a difficulty with reading. The more time spent in academic spaces, the clearer it became how heavily knowledge is exchanged through text. Reading shapes how we learn, interpret, and produce meaning. Yet many understandings of the city exist beyond written form.
Films and documentaries offer a way to encounter these knowledges differently. The works gathered here engage with urban life through lived experience, observation, and storytelling. By moving beyond text alone, they open other ways of seeing, feeling, and knowing the urban.
Beyond Words grew from a single screening into a shared repository and a monthly screening group. It is kept as an evolving list, not a finished one.
Working draft, to be developed.
The list grows through suggestions. Tell us what to watch and what it opens about the urban. Recommendations reach the curators for review before anything is added.
